Entry For IST 396

Like many of my classmates I am new to this.  I honestly have no idea what to blog about.

I signed up and played around with the designs for a half hour or so.

I found this adopt-a-pet gadget.  You should feed my fish Carlos <-----------

Still no topic...  Got a bowl of Raisin Bran Crunch.  Hoping brain food will power an entry out of me.

Ok.  I couldn't think of anything creative so I will share my hobby.

I have always had a fish tank or two since my middle school days.  I have always had a fascination with fish and other sea creatures.  At one point I wished to be a marine biologist.  I am no fish pro by any means.  I have always enjoyed my smaller freshwater aquariums.  I have no desire to try saltwater tanks due to the price and upkeep.  The largest I have had is a 20 gallon.  Perhaps someday I will purchase a much larger tank.

With that said here are a few pictures of my current tank.

Photo One shows my newest member Buzz (zebra pattern) and Winston the red tailed shark.

Photo Two shows the rest of the gang <from left to right> Plecy the pleco, Winston again, and then there are 7 tigerbarbs who are difficult to tell apart so they are nameless :(

  1. I give you credit Jordan. I have a dog and pawn off the pooper scooper responsibility on him, but I can't handle a fish tank. We had one, and it was small. So small I could not find a syphion small enough. I think we had a 5 gallon tank. With Brice being 7 at the time I could not trust him to clean the tank and I was sick of the yucky water and smells when I cleaned it out. So I would rather have dog poop all over my back yard then fun, carefree fish in a tank.
It looks like you take good care of them though.

  2. Awesome tanks! Looks like you bought them all kinds of cool stuff! Fish seem like they would be great pets, because although they have no way to showing affection, they are easy upkeep and awesome to watch, not to mention a really cool hobby! Are you thinking about getting any more fish? If so, what kind do you think you will get next?

  3. Jordan, you're funny! I fed carlos, he should be set for a while. My best friend has had a large tank in her living room since middle school. They have 2 really big fish that freak me out. I don't like fish, they give me the heebie jeebies. We recently found out that one of my friend's fish is dying. We googled, the "humane" way to kill a fish. The reuslts were to put the fish in water with clove oil (I guess clove oil has been used as an anesthetic for fish for many years) and then after the fish seems sedated to put vodka in the water. The vodka is ultimately what puts the fish to rest. She hasn't tried it yet, but the fish can't eat, swim or anything. So in case you ever need it, now you know. P.S. I like your red tailed shark (pretty cool)

    1. Interesting info on how to help a dying fish. It is pretty sad to watch as they swim in circles and gasp for air when they are dying. I will definitely give this suggestion to my husband for the next time one of our fish are suffering.

  5. I think that having a fish tank would be so cool! I have always wanted to try a salt water tank, but when we were looking at them it was way to expensive for what we could afford & that wasn't even guaranteeing that the fish would live. I like Carlos :)I'm gonna go feed him

  6. I LOVE CARLOS! I fed him, a lot. But anyways, my best friend also loves fish and she has a salt water tank, it's so beautiful and fun to watch.

  7. Hey Jordan!

Your background picture looks great and flows nicely with your theme. Carlos is pretty cool too and adds some personality to your page. I really like your fishies, the only thing I've had in an aquarium is my pet turtle but he got too big and I had to give him back to the wild!

  8. Jordan,

I liked that you spiced it up a little by adding your pet, Carlos. Very cute! Your layout is also very unique. I like the little water drops. Great pictures of your fish tank. I love the zebra print fish. Zebras are my favorite animal, so to see it on a fish is amazing!

  9. Great job on your blog. My husband is the one who takes care of the fish tank. It has been a hobby of his for about 20 years. He had to give up his saltwater tank when we moved but would like to do another one some day. Right now we just have a plecostamus we call Pleco. He is about 8 inches long and likes to eat these little black worms. I give you guys credit for all the work you put into maintaining the tank and caring for the fish.

    P.S. I fed Carlos.

  10. I am 21 years old and I got pure joy out of feeding your fish. I was like a small child getting him to chase to each side of the tank for food (mean, I know). But clearly, I love that feature of your blog. I have always wanted a fish, so reading your blog was really interesting! :)

  13. Jordan, the important thing about a blog is that it can be about anything. It can be random thoughts or an a recap of the events that happened that day. Nice work!

  14. I like your pet. That is a neat idea to have on a blog. Something I might be looking into!

  15. I too had a horrible time coming up with an idea, but I think your blog is starting out great! All the fish I have ever owned died of horrible deaths, so my family just gave up with them! The first time we had fish was when I was five and I turned up the head in the fish tank because I thought "they were taking a bath" and like me, would want the water to be hot. Lets just say it ended with my mother telling me the fish went on vacation...as she secretely flushed the burnt little guys down the toilet! Your fish are very interesting looking, where do you normally buy them at?

  16. I tried to have a fish tank, I couldn't keep my fish alive to save my life - constant battle with ich no matter how much I cleaned out my tank and dried it out so I gave it up. My brother has actually had a salt water tank for probably close to 10 years now. You are absolutely right very expensive upkeep. The initial set up was pricy - but even when it's time to do upkeep it's pricy - not to mention the fish themselves.

  19. First off, I love that you have a fish to feed on your blog. that is amazing awesome. Second, I think its really cool that you have been keeping up with fish for so long. I've had pet fish before (its honestly the only pet I can have without my allergies going crazy) but I don't have much luck with it. Do you have any tips or pointers?
